Днешната дата 9 февруари е знаменателна за българския спорт. Точно на нея, точно преди 20 години беше постигнат най-големия успех в историята на българските зимни спортове. Той беше дело на Екатерина Дафовска, която завоюва първият и единствен засега златен медал за страната ни на зимни олимпийски игри.

Това стана в биатлона, в индивидуалната дисциплина на 15 км на Игрите в Нагано (Япония). Дафовска направи само една грешка в четирите си стрелби и завърши на първо място с преднина от 17,8 секунди пред втората Олена Петрова (Украйна). Българският успех можеше да е още по-голям, но само 2 стотни разделиха Павлина Филипова от бронзовия медал и тя остана на 4-та позиция.

Златото на Дафовска беше и едва втория медал за България от Зимни Олимпийски игри. Те са общо 6. Иван Лебанов е пионерът с бронз в ски бягането от Игрите в Осло през 1980-а, със същия цвят отличие притежава биатлонистката Ирина Никулчина от Солт Лейк Сити 2002, а Евгения Раданова има цели 3 медала в шорттрека – сребро и бронз от Солт Лейк Сити 2002 и сребро от Торино 2006.
