Сблъсъкът между Ливърпул и Манчестър Юнайтед е безспорно най-голямото дерби в родината на футбола. Това са двата най-успешни английски отбори – с най-много титли в страната и с най-много сред сънародниците си в Европа. Към всичко това прибавяме и фактът, че двата града са съседни и така се оформя картината на най-голямото съперничество в Англия.

Защо обаче точно този сблъсък? Ако погледнем историята на английското първенство двата тима не винаги са били равнопоставени, а съперничеството им датира още преди големите им успехи.

Истината обаче е, че враждата изобщо не е футболна и се корени извън терена. Тя се базира на съперничеството между двата града, които са припознати именно чрез тези отбори.

Ливърпул и Манчестър отстоят само на 35 мили (54 км) един от друг в област Ланкашир, в Северозападна Англия. Ливърпул е ключово пристанище за страната, а Манчестър е градът, от който е започнала Индустриалната революция. Нейната основна движеща сила била текстилната промишленост, чиито център бил точно Манчестър. През 1830 г. дори е изградена железопътна линия между двата града, а целта била ясна – множеството стоки от пристанището е трябвало да бъдат превозени до фабриките в Манчестър.

Всичко обаче се обърква в края на 1857 г. , когато настъпва световна финансова криза, останала в историята като Паниката от Уолтстрийт, вследствие на редица реформи в САЩ, довели и до Гражданската война (1861-1865). Какво общо обаче има Гражданската война в САЩ с Ливърпул и Манчестър? Основната суровина за доходоносната текстилна промишленост в Англия била евтиният памук от американския юг, която пък била евтина благодарение на робския труд. Севера печели войната, а една от последиците е отменянето на робството. Автоматично това води и до поскъпване на памука.

Ливърпулските власти решават да се възползват от кризата и увеличават различните такси за пристигащите кораби с памук за манчестърските фабрики.Това никак не се понравило на бизнесмените от Манчестър, които в един момент вече били поставени пред угрозата да фалират заради нарасналите разходи. Вдъхновени от наскоро построения Суецки канал в те се решават на смел ход – построяването на канал до града, който да позволи на корабите да акостират възможно най-близо до фабриките. Дългият 58 км канал е отворен на 1 януари 1894 г. С него Манчестър нарушава статуквото и директно заобикаля пристанището на Ливърпул. Последствията за работната ръка край река Мърси са значителни и така враждата вече става двустранна. Първо ливърпулци „удрят“ съседите си от Манчестър с високи такси, а отговорът предизвиква безработица и значителни икономически последствия.

Само няколко месеца по-късно е първият мач между Ливърпул и Нютън Хийт (старото име на Манчестър Юнайтед) и съперничеството се пренася на футболния терен.
